Baldread Music

Over the past 10 years teaching artist, Craig Ward aka Teacher Craig, has built an outstanding record, as a mentor, performing artist, teaching artist and preschool teacher. He creates workshops in which kids and adult participants are given direct exposure to the creative process, and in doing so, they are provided with avenues for communicating through music, speech, and body language.so useful in nurturing the development of motor, cognitive, and creative skills. This has, in many cases, shown itself to be of lasting value.

Teacher Craig performs original music and inspires others to do so also. Whether performing as a circle time soloist, or with a whole group, his cutting edge style of music and movement will have the audience dancing and singing to the message, “It's important to exercise, smile, and have fun while letting the music sooth the heart so the mind can relax and enjoy.” Teacher Craig's music is therapeutic. Choosing this music is an investment in the lives of the young, and young at heart, and by extension, an investment in the future of our society.

Music And Lyric By Teacher Craig Ward

Exercise Your Body Worksheet. In these interactive activities students get lots of repetitions, movements and voice play. Three domain skills are used; Cognitive learning through active participation and exploration, Language and literacy, listening and speaking, Motor, muscle movement and coordination. The CD has original steady beats with a Caribbean flavor. But the activities work well without the music, and will open the door to exploring open-ended questions. Lyric and Activities can be interchanged.

Activity Scarf Dance; No circle needed, have everyone stand, take a scarf, try to keep up with the movements from the CD. Expand; Scarf Touch  Group stands in circle while leader passes scarves. Everyone with a scarf moves together the way the leader commands. Leader can make up sounds and silly words. Have leader call colors of the scarfs to pick dancers or do a movement.

Song Scarf Dance
Can you touch your scarf up high? Can you touch it down low? Can you touch your head? Can you touch your toes?  Can you touch it to the left?  Can you touch it to the right?  Can you twirl it in a circle? Oh, that looks so nice! Can you touch it on your ear like you really want to hear? Can you  touch it  on your nose  like you have a little cold? Can you touch it on your lips while you give a little wisp? Can you touch it on your shoulder? Does it feeling any colder? Can you touch it on your belly? Does it shake like jelly? Can you touch your hips? Do your hands just slip? Can you touch it on your knees? Can you bend like me,  When I touch on the floor? When I do the Scarf Dance, Scarf Dance, come and do the Scarf Dance with me. Freestyle

Activity Show me your Rhythm; (Rhythm Sticks needed ) Group follows the leader's beat on the CD. Expand; Leader uses picture cards with names or numbers, then group taps out the syllables in the words, spells the words or taps out numbers on the cards. Use your body to make a rhythm or movement.
Rules; Do not hit, throw, or touch anyone with the sticks. Leave sticks in front of you until ready to use.

Song Show me your Rhythm; Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move, Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move. Hi boys and girls. It's me, Teacher Craig, and today we're going to play a new game called, Show me your Rhythm, and to play this game all you have to do is follow along using your rhythm sticks. Are you ready? Lets go. Left right, left right. Your turn. Left right. My turn. Left right, left right. Your turn. Left right. My turn. Left right left, left right. Your turn. Left right left, left right. Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move. Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move. Now it's time to go across the bridge, and to get across the bridge we have to do something a little bit different than what we where doing before. So, let's think about it. What can we do that's different and exciting, that we could use to get across the bridge? In music to get across the bridge, you must do something different. Remember that. Are you ready? What will you add to your beat? Are you ready? Here we go. Keep going. Half way there. Hang on. Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move Show me your rhythm, show me you rhythm move. Great work! Now you know how to play the game. Its your turn. Be safe, take turns, and show everyone your rhythm.

Activity Make a Shape

Explore open-ended question about making shapes and where they come from. You can ask questions like; Do you think animals or people have shapes? What about letters and numbers? Do they have shapes? What shapes can you make with your bodies? If I hold up three fingers is that a shape? Can anyone make this shape? Talk about lines and curves, trees and plants, or something from your lesson for the day.

Let them make free style shapes with their bodies to the music. Next make the shapes in the lyrics as we explore a combination of follow the leader and freestyle movement all in one song. This is a good exercise for learning to listen, following directions and building motor skills while having fun, creating movements. Expand; Use pictures of shapes, or create shapes out of pipe cleaners for those not able to make the physical movements. Use shapes to form patterns for example, drawing a triangle and then drawing a square under it to make a house or tree.

Song Make a Shape

Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want!  Shapes are made from lines and curves, from little cats to standing birds. Shapes are made from lines and curves, from fancy shirts to silly words. Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any shape you want! Make a shape, make a shape, any way you want! Can you make a Circle? Say yes, oh yes! Can you make a Circle? Say yes, oh yes! Can you make a Triangle? Say yes, oh yes! Can you make a Triangle? Activity Switch!
Students observe what other students are wearing. Form two straight lines across from each another with the leader in the middle
To play this game a leader calls out information based on what they have observed from the group.  Example; if your wearing blue pants hop to the other line. If you have strips on your shirt fly to the other line. After a few turns choose a new leader.
This game helps build cognitive and critical thinking. Also used to help mix the group and meet new partners.

Clap my Name
Form a circle. Everyone clap to a steady beat. When everyone feels comfortable, go around the circle one at a time and say names over the beat. Next try to say names to the steady beat. Next sound out the syllables in names and tell how many. Last say names and everyone else repeats that name. Example; My name is Craig, Everyone say, “Hi Craig.” It's okay not to do all the steps in one lesson.

Activity Rhythm of the Heart Beat
Everyone find and feel their heart beat. After everyone feels the beat, mimic the heart beats with hands. Play heart beat rhythms louder while listening to hear if everyone's heart beats the same. Then ask open questions like, “Do you hear rhythm in the heart beats? Can they beat together as one rhythm? How does your heart beat sound?”

Activity Clap your Hands
Everyone stand. Repeat what leader says and does in call and respond style. Start slowly See how fast the group can go.
The Words and Movements Are; One, two clap your hands (make 6 claps to your rhythm) Three, four knock on the door (make 6 knocks to your rhythm) Five, six play your drum sticks (make 6 ratatat to your rhythm) Seven eight play your bass (make 6 booms to your rhythm) Nine, ten play your violin (make 6 sounds to your rhythm) Expand: Continue to make up things to the number 20.

Activity Pass the Boom Boom; Stand in circle. Use small balls, bean bags, or water balloons. Pass around in a circle without dropping or braking. Chant the words, Pass the boom boom, fast and slow to add affect. Also reverse direction or throw in the air over someone.
Directions; Start with one ball. Pass around the circle. When everyone feels comfortable, add more balls and reverse directions. When someone drops the ball, run around the circle to find a new spot.
Expand; Add music and pass the balls to the beat. Close your eyes!
